Bordering the icy waters of northwestern Alaska's Chukchi Sea, Cape Krusenstern National Monument has fascinating geological formations to explore. The coastal plain is bordered by limestone hills and punctuated by large lagoons that attract many species of migratory birds. The land within this monument is still used today by the Inupiat people who make use of the plants and animals native to the region. With no onsite resources or amenities, the park is best suited for travelers who understand the trials of true backcountry adventure. Kayaking is the best way to explore the lagoons and surrounding sea, but even this is a very challenging undertaking and only feasible during the summer months when the ice has melted. Isolated and only accessible by boat, foot travel or airplane, the monument sees few outside visitors in any given year.
Open daily year round. Kotzebue visitor center open Mon. - Fri. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Closed Sat. - Sun. Kotzebue Innaigvik center open during summer only, call for details.
Free.
