Situated about thirty miles north of the Arctic Circle, the land within Kobuk Valley National Park is truly the Alaskan wilderness. Occupying a massive valley that runs between the Baird Mountains and the Kobuk Sand Dunes, the park sees annual migrations of some 400,000 caribou. There are no roads or trails to provide easy travel around the park, requiring visitors to have extensive backcountry traveling and camping experience in order to be able to truly enjoy the park. Often there are well under 5,000 visitors to the park in an entire year, sometimes less than 1,000, meaning that it would be easy to stay in Kobuk Valley for days without encountering anyone else. Getting to the park is difficult: air travel is the quickest and safest way to make it to the park, whereupon hiking or dogsledding are preferred methods of travel within the park itself.
Open daily year round. Visitor center open during summer only, call for details.
